چکیده

RECOMMENDATIONS DIAGNOSTIC: Standards: There is insufficient evidence to support diagnostic standards. Guidelines: Computed tomographic imaging is recommended for establishing the diagnosis of occipital condyle fractures. Clinical suspicion should be raised by the presence of one or more of the following criteria: blunt trauma patients sustaining high-energy craniocervical injuries, altered consciousness, occipital pain or tenderness, impaired cervical motion, lower cranial nerve paresis, or retropharyngeal soft tissue swelling. Options: Magnetic resonance imaging is recommended to assess the integrity of the craniocervical ligaments.

Occipital condyle fractures: clinical presentation and radiologic detection.

PURPOSE To describe the CT findings in occipital condyle fractures in patients suffering craniocervical trauma. METHODS Six occipital condyle fractures in five patients were analyzed. Because of clinical or plain-film findings, the craniocervical junction in each patient was imaged using thin-section, high-resolution CT. Axial data were reformatted in the coronal plane or in both coronal and ...

Occipital condyle fracture with associated hypoglossal nerve injury.

THE CANADIAN JOURNAL OF NEUROLOGICAL SCIENCES Occipital condyle fracture (OCF) is a rare injury that was first described by Bell in 1817. In fact, there have been only 96 more reported cases of occipital condyle fractures from 1817 to 1994 of which only 58 survived.1 Occipital condyle fractures can sometimes go unnoticed or under-diagnosed as they are not always evident on plain radiographs of ...

Upper cervical spine injuries.

The unique anatomy of the upper cervical spine and the typical mechanisms of injury yield a predictable variety of injury patterns. Traumatic ligamentous injuries of the atlanto-occipital joint and transverse atlantal ligament are relatively uncommon, have a poor prognosis for healing, and often respond best to surgical stabilization. Bony injuries, including occipital condyle fractures, atlas ...

Sixth and Twelfth Cranial Nerve Palsies Following Basal Skull Fracture Involving Clivus and Occipital Condyle

Oblique basal skull fractures resulting from lateral crushing injuries involving both clivus and occipital condyle are rare due to their deep locations. Furthermore, these fractures may present clinically with multiple cranial nerve injuries because neural exit routes are restricted in this intricate region. The authors present an interesting case of basal skull fractures involving the clivus a...

Collet-Sicard Syndrome Associated with Occipital Condyle Fracture and Epidural Hematoma

A 31-year-old male was presented with a very rare case of ipsilateral palsies of the nerves IX through XII (Collet-Sicard syndrome) after a closed head injury. An occipital condyle fracture that was associated with epidural hematoma was diagnosed by computed tomography. The patient was conservatively managed, and following the treatment, partial neurological recovery ensued. The phenomenon of o...
